Dr. Barry McAuley BEng, BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, MCIOB –  As a result of working within the AEC industry it has presented me with the opportunity to continuously and professionally develop my managerial skills through employment in a number of diverse roles. These managerial positions include that of a project manager on both a planning and operational capacity, on a number of high profile jobs. These roles have not just been confined to the AEC industry but have seen me occupy strategic managerial positions within the Facilities Management (FM) sector.

In 2009 in order to further develop my knowledge and practical skills an MSc in Construction Project Management was undertaken which was subsequently completed in 2010. After a period of traveling it was decided to further expand my project management capabilities by undertaking a Ph.D. in the area of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and FM, which I completed in May of 2016. During this period, along with a continued presence in industry, I worked with CitA on a part-time basis with regards to the R&D of their BIM Workshops and yearly Conference. This position was complemented through a part-time lecturing position on two DIT accredited master programmes

After completion of my PhD, I was awarded a Postdoctoral Scholarship through DIT’s prestigious Arnold F Graves Scholars Programme which lead to working with CitA for 18 months on their BIM Innovation Capability Programme for Ireland. During this period I was also recognised as a Chartered Construction Manager by the CIOB. In January of 2018, I accepted a position on a specified purpose contract as a full-time Assistant Lecturer (AL) in BIM and Management within DIT. In September 2018 I was subsequently awarded a permanent position as an AL in Digital Construction and Engineering in DIT.

Through a significant combination of industry reports, conference and journal papers has enabled the dissemination of my research within the domain of BIM throughout the AEC/FM sector.
